MEET TARA + SUSANNA

Meet TARA

Tara Kenny is a Certified Professional Midwife, Certified Lactation Counselor and Doula who has been attending births since 2000 and has practiced in the Boston area since 2006. She lives in Cambridge and has two of her own children. She is extremely passionate about VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean), especially after having a VBAC  herself in 2015.

Tara's interest in women's health and pregnancy began while completing her BA in Sociology and Anthropology at Lewis and Clark College in 1999. In 2000, she took a doula training and then traveled to Kenya to live and work in a rural hospital as part of her thesis on childbirth practices.

Inspired to go further in this work, Tara attended the National College of Midwifery and trained at the Northern New Mexico Midwifery Birth Center attending home births, birth center, and hospital births. She spent three years in this program as an apprentice and received comprehensive training on prenatal, postpartum, and well-woman care. In 2006, she became a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM). Since receiving her certification, Tara has traveled to work in birth centers in Australia, Belize, and Senegal. She also became a Certified Lactation Counselor through The Healthy Children Project.

Tara is motivated by a strong belief that families deserve compassionate and loving support throughout their childbearing years. Whether working as a midwife, doula, or in other capacities, her goal is to help people to make empowered and educated choices about childbirth.

When Tara is not working, she is biking, running, and enjoying time outside with her friends and family.

Meet SUSANNA

Susanna Mauzy was introduced to midwifery while she attended the University of Wisconsin through a friend whose mother is a midwife. It wasn't long before she felt a strong pull and desire to do this work. After receiving her BA in Religious Studies, she began participating in births as a doula. In 2009, Susanna graduated from Birthwise School of Midwifery.

While enrolled at Birthwise, Susanna took part in many births with a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) in conjunction with her coursework. After finishing her core curriculum at Birthwise, she began a year-long apprenticeship with a busy midwife serving women in Maryland, Delaware, and Pennsylvania. She then spent two months in an apprenticeship working with the Amish community in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Susanna became a CPM in 2012 and since then has been working as a birth doula and CPM.

When she is not attending births and prenatal appointments, she enjoys local music shows and running around her Arlington neighborhood. She is an avid reader and a skilled knitter who enjoys the diverse cuisine of the Boston area.
